How to Get Started as a Real Estate Agent

Are you considering a career in real estate? The real estate arena can be intimidating. In order to have a successful career as a real estate agent, you have to learn to navigate the ins and outs of the marketplace. Even then, the market is always changing and the pace can pick up quickly! Where do you begin? Being your own boss means setting your own hours, organizing your own marketing, lead generation and networking, and growing your business! First things first. Before you begin the matchmaking process of finding individuals their dream homes, you’ll need to get a real estate license first. The timeline, qualifications, and costs of getting your real estate license are different from state to state. If you previously held a real estate license in another state, it’s always good to check with your current state’s commission to view requirements for transferring. Keep in mind the policies of some agencies, their requirements may vary as well. If you’re starting fresh you’ll want to get set up with the real estate exam for your state. 

You’ll want to find out if you live in a state that requires you to work for a brokerage. This typically is a 2-3 year period. When choosing an agency to be employed with, it’s important to consider the size, your expectations, commute, and commission. These are crucial elements to beginning your career as a successful real estate agent. 


Create a Personal Plan

Planning is essential to just about everything. Especially if you’re transitioning from an office job to becoming your own boss! The best thing you can do for yourself early on is to get organized and create a plan for yourself. Effective time management! April & I have spent a lot of time organizing and creating schedules for ourselves. When you enter the real estate game and become your own boss you need to have some sort of accountability plan in place. Keep your hustle in check. Focus on what boundaries you want to set for yourself.

  • What time do you want to start work every day?
  • What time do you want to end each day?
  • How much money do you want to make? 

Creating a plan-of-action for each day will be a useful habit later on in your real estate career. Create an outline or jot down your plans, whatever works for you. Creating a plan for your day will help create structure early on before you’re swarming with clients. Get after it early on! 


Create a Business Plan

Now that you’ve taken the time to create a personal plan of action, it’s time to get down to business. How will you set yourself apart in the world of real estate? What do you believe makes a good real estate agent? Taking the time to research the current market is a great step to setting the foundation for your business plan. Here is where you can outline your goals and even create some core values if that’s something you believe will make you stand out.

The more research you put into creating your business plan for your real estate business, the easier it will be to build it. 


Create a Marketing Plan 

Creating a marketing plan is fundamental to starting your real estate business. How will people find you or hear about you? In order for them to, you need to show up! The hustle doesn’t stop in the online world, and it’s more important than ever to keep up. Utilizing different social media platforms such as Facebook is a cheap and effective way to stay in front of your audience. Here you can share home buying tips, moving advice, etc to further establish your relationship with your audience. A couple of posts a week can go a long way!
